Low-depth engineering drilling

Low-depth engineering drilling is a set of operations for drilling of wells of various types up to 600 meters deep to resolve a number of geological issues, including studying the geological structure of large regions, determination of common patterns in bedding of the rocks.

SET OF SERVICES INCLUDE:

  • Drilling of pilot wells;
  • Drilling of stratigraphic wells.

The mining companies at the early stages of studying the licensed areas have insufficient information about the structure and properties of the target geological structures. Availability of such information reduces a number of geological risks. Stratigraphic drilling from geotechnical vessels is a relatively simple and cost-effective method to obtain such information.

The essence of the method is the identification of the target geological areas on the basis of regional data and sampling by drilling of relatively low-depth wells. To receive the additional information the both types of the operations can be supplemented with well logging measurements.

To perform this type of activities RosGeo uses two specialized vessels: research vessels “Bavenit” and “Kimberlite”. These vessels have drilled on the shelf of the Russian Arctic over 1270 engineering-geological and static sounding wells of a total depth exceeding 42490 m.

ADVANTAGES OF PILOT WELLS PRELIMINARY DRILLING WITH INVOLVEMENT OF SPECIALIZED GEOTECHNICAL VESSELS

The drilling of a pilot well of a small diameter, which is not used in exploratory drilling, reduces the risk of adverse effects in case of a possible gas ingress.

The operation costs of a specialized geotechnical vessel are significantly lower than the expenditures for engagement of a floating drilling rig and a fleet of auxiliary vessels. The performance of a pilot drilling within the framework of the engineering surveys excludes the mobilization and demobilization costs.

A preliminary pilot drilling from geotechnical vessels saves the total time needed for operations in drilling of exploration wells. The performance of the works in the framework of the engineering surveys allows to prevent a number of geological risks and determine the location for installation of the floating drilling rig in advance.
